Can the body speak? Does it have a dialect? A grammar? Does the body, like language, derive meaning from the figures that surround it or does it stand alone, self-evident? A photographer is lauded for his use of shadow and composition—his capacity to craft a photograph in the same way a writer crafts an essay. But in portraiture the will of the image-maker butts up against that of the subject.  Her art is in the verbiage of her body. Both subject and object, she wrests control. Her composure—a slight wrinkle at the bridge of her nose, the way she holds her hands—is the raw material of a photograph.  Body language is always relational. To return to the essay analogy: a model is the rough draft to a photographer’s final edit. They collaborate on the essential meaning.
